Part 7: Powder coating

Powder coating is a very interesting invention. In a nut shell, powder coating is a process that is in one hand, no different than painting, yet in the other hand, is totally different.

Basically, the parts are cleaned, sand blasted or bead blasted or what ever, depending on the material, then they are sprayed like paint, but with powder. The powder is like a talcum powder like material in the color and finish of choice. In the case of this CBX, high gloss black. The part is negatively charged, and the powder is positively charged so that when it is sprayed onto the part via a regular automotive spray gun, the powder adheres to the part. One interesting thing is that when the powder goes on, it has a dull look to it, no matter what finish you have chosen. The part is then put into an oven and cooked at 450 degrees for a period of time. When it comes out, you have a perfect hard as nails finish. And in the case of the high gloss black items of the CBX, they have that beautiful flawless high gloss finish that they had from the factory. Check out the pictures below. These happen to be of my 1100F frame and all of the other black parts to the bike.

Powder coating is the only way to go in my opinion. These shots are of my 1100F, but the idea is the same. All this that you see here cost me about $400.00 including the frame.

It would have been $300.00, but I had some items done in a semi-gloss finish to match factory finishes on handle bar items and triple clamps etc. When you add additional finishes or colors, they charge an extra $100.00. Still, that is way less than a painter would charge, and you get a better and more durable finish that is much more resistant to chemicals and rock chips etc.
